Money Matters: A Student’s Guide to Financial Literacy
April 01, 2026

For over 20 years, April has been designated as National Financial Literacy Month. It is a great reminder that managing your money is a key part of preparing for life after college. At the LSU Olinde Career Center, we help students build skills for both career and financial success.
What is Financial Literacy?
In the simplest terms financial literacy is understanding how to manage money; including: budgeting, saving, borrowing, and investing. These are essential life skills that help you make informed decisions about your finances now and in the future.
Why it Matters
Financial literacy isn’t just about numbers; it’s about independence and opportunity. College is one of the best times to start building or fine-tuning these money skills to set yourself up for success long after graduation.
Your financial knowledge also plays a role in your career journey. While your career choice shouldn’t be all about money, understanding salary, benefits and cost of living factors can help you make confident, informed decisions about job offers and long-term goals.
Financial Literacy Skills Can Help You:
- Reduce stress by learning how to budget and manage your day-to-day expenses
- Make smart borrowing choices with student loans and credit cards
- Take control of your credit by building and maintaining a healthy credit history
- Prepare for emergencies with a savings safety net
- Plan for your future by understanding salary, insurance, benefits, and long-term goals
